Classroom Sessions @ ILP

Back to college days? Ohh yes. ILP is a mixture of fun@college and professionalism@work. Well, as I've mentioned in the comments to my previous posts, the classroom sessions are from 9am to 5.45pm. The schedule is as follows,

9am to 11am : First Session
11am to 11.30am : Tea/Coffee Break
11.30am to 1.15pm : Second Session
1.15pm to 2.00pm : Lunch Break
2.00pm to 3.30pm : Third Session
3.30pm to 4.00pm : Tea/Coffee Break
4.00pm to 5.45pm : Fourth Session

The bus comes at 7.30am sharp. You need to get up early in the morning, get ready and wait for the bus. The bus takes you to the training centre. There you have time for breakfast. The sessions start at 9am sharp.

The sessions can be divided into three broad categories - technical sessions, life skills sessions and foreign language sessions. Amongst these, life skills sessions are the most cheerful and enjoyable. In these sessions, they teach you about professional grooming, dining etiquette, listening skills, communication skills, group activities and many more things. You have a lot of case studies and role plays. Role plays are the most enjoyable part. They form the groups dynamically. Each group is assigned a subject/theme. Based on that, you need to perform in front of rest of the class. Dynamic group forming is done as follows - The process starts from the first person sitting in the first (or last) row in the corner. First person will say the number "1". The next person sitting to him/her will say "2", the next "3" and so on. The maximum number you say depends on the number of groups that need to be formed. For example, if 4 groups are required, then the number calling goes like this - 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1… and so on. Next, all 1's are made to sit together; same thing happens with all 2's, 3's and 4's. Now, the groups are formed, you are ready for the group activities.

Technical sessions are the most boring part of the ILP. But you have to attend all the sessions and can’t bunk any of them. If you miss 2 sessions, you are directly out of the ILP. It's that strict. As a computer science batch, we were expected to know the technical topics and hence all the topics were not taught to us in detail, but the sessions were interactive and we made to contribute our knowledge during these sessions. Non-comps students are not expected to know these subjects, so need not worry. They teach you C++, Java, UNIX, DMBS, Software Engineering, Testing Techniques etc. All the material will be provided in the ILP. For software engineering, the book they give you is "Jalote" (This is the author name). For other subjects, they have their own course material that is sufficient for passing the final test.

Foreign language sessions are equally entertaining as that of the life skills sessions. Learning a new language is too much fun. They also show you some videos/movies in that language. You have assignments, mock tests, conversations, presentations and lot more things. The foreign language for our batch was German. Our faculty was very good, her name was Shivani; very beautiful lady indeed. Since our batch was very small, she used to pay attention to each and every candidate in the class. Few of us were from Kolkata and had accent problem. We always noticed their Bengali accent while speaking German. But, Shivani ma'am made them change the way they spoke. We also had basic conversations from the German handout that was given to us. "Darf ich herein kommen?" well, this is the German for “May I come in?”. Whenever anyone used to come late for the German session, he/she had to ask this before coming in. I think this is one line we remembered the most. In these sessions, they also teach you the grammar of the foreign language, sentence formation and pronunciation. Fun filled sessions indeed.

During classroom sessions, nobody is allowed to wander outside (except CR of course ;-) ). You are supposed to keep the cell phones off during the sessions. Everyone needs to sign the attendance sheet for every session. After end of the session, you'll be given feedback forms that everyone has to fill promptly and return them to the CR.

Well, if you are just out of the college and joining TCS ILP, it wouldn't be much difficult for you. The only difference is, in ILP the things are stricter and you are expected to behave more responsibly and professionally. After all, we are going to be IT professionals and this is just the beginning, right?

@Anonymous,

Hi,

As I have already mentioned and every time I say that "ILP days were the golden days of my life". Some people say that ILP days are paid holidays. This is true up to certain extent. These two months are the most cheerful and enjoyable part of your job in TCS.

In ILP, you don’t have lots of parties, but you have ample of time to roam around and explore the city. Visit new places, go to malls, and find new restaurants.

When I was in ILP, we had family day organized at one of the TCS branches - Deccan Park. There we had lot of fun - food, dance, DJ and lot of enjoyment.

You will definitely enjoy ur ILP, no doubt about that. After two months you'll also say that "ILP days were the golden days..." (Because the life becomes miserable later...just kidding :) )

hii
thanks for ur info abt ILP. Actually i m frm bihar board n my communication skill is vey poor.so i want to ask u whether i'll have to suffer in the ILP because of my communication skill. I have heard that in the classes of life style each one have to speak up there.
so plz reply.

ILP Days... said...

Hi Satish,

Thanks for your comments.

Well, that's a lot of questions hmm? Ok, here I go...

1. CSE and non-CSE people are NOT in the same class, the batches are formed accordingly.

2. In general, there are around 30 to 40 candidates in a batch. Our batch was the smallest one consisting of only 27 people.

3. Gym is not available in the training centre or hotel. You might want to hunt for the gym in the locality.

4. In the evening time, you have ample of time. You may relax at hotel or go out for a walk; there are no restrictions as such. You will also have assignments to complete, that might be in the late evening. We used to go to Madhapur (a place 15 mins away from our hotel) for having tea and bhajiya.

5. There are a variety of assignments. For example, you will need to complete essays, prepare for the role plays, speech in the foreign language, solve the question papers given to you and lot more stuff.

6. Mid term test is very important. It's an open book multiple choice test. Even if it's an open book test, u'll have to prepare for it because it's very difficult to find the answer from the bunch of books in the limited time of the test. The result of mid term determines your rating in the first quarter in TCS, so take it seriously.

7. The answer to your last question is very obvious. All the students cannot stay in the same hostel/hotel. In our case, the people were accommodated in 5 hotels in all.

@Anonymous

Hi,

First of all let me tell you that ILP is Initial Learning Program and you are going there to learn something. You are not going for any interview or exam. So, don't worry. You will not suffer because of your communication.

ILP is to groom yourself as a professional and you are not expected to have all the professional skills beforehand. As you mentioned correctly, in life skills sessions, you will have to speak in the front of the class, but that is to improve your communication skills and come out of your fear. What if tomorrow you have to give a speech in front of the client? So, take ILP as an opportunity to improve your communication skills and be confident. Wish you all the best.

hi .. thanks for the answer...did we have to use the same book which is given by tcs to the exam or can we take our own book?
have u got u r first month salary??

ILP Days... said...

Hi Satish,

We need to use the material provided by TCS. Actually, that is more than sufficient. You need not have any other material during test. Nevertheless, you can refer other books before the test.

You get your first two month's salary towards the end of the second month.

thanks a lottt.ur blog has upadated me a lot. i have my ilp @coimbatore.so the case may be different from urs as i heard c'tore is quite strict.
i just want to know any prior preparation is required for the ilp as in just brushing up C or C++.

ILP Days... said...

Hi Divya,

It's better if u brush up ur technical knowledge. Other than C & C++, u also have a look at Java, UNIX commands and shell script, DBMS etc.

@Anonymous

Hi,

To my knowledge, whatever you've heard is not correct. ILP centre allocation is completely random and you cannot predict it based on your college.

Hyderabad is definitely one of the best training centres but I will not say that it is the best. This is because I only have the experience of Hyderabad ILP; but I've heard from many of my collegues that their training centres (other than Hyderabad) were equally good.

i have a question regarding dbms-do they teach oracle or sql server in ilp?

ILP Days... said...

@ Anonymous

Hi,

In ILP, they don't teach any specific technology, but basic concepts of DBMS. If you know the basics, you can learn these specific packages easily. For demonstration purpose, they use Oracle or MySQL on UNIX.

2.How will they help me to do MCA ,n i plan to do from abroad if u have any idea regarding this plz post
3.I have given only one reference no n tat too i hav put an extra 2 in it as a result of which it is wrong so wat should i do now
4.U have metioned the BOND a lot of times whn do i need to sign the bond
5.How many persons do they take after the training all or take few of them .

i will be waiting for ur reply bye hav a grt time

we were said that our offer letter will be posted within 5-6 mnths that is jan feb is it fine .Is there any chance tat they may not send it or cancel the appointment with out any reason

ILP Days... said...

Hi Rajib,

1. You have same carrier opportunities that other bachelor degree holders have. If you complete masters, that wud be an added advantage and will definitely help you.

2. TCS provides help for higher education. I am not very sure at this moment, but you can pursue MCA part-time or correspondence course (better if u can do it full-time)

3. Where have you given ur contact number? You can contact local HR and talk to them about the same. If you have provided an email address then don't worry. They can contact u thru email.

4. You sign the bond when u get a joining letter and need to submit when u join ILP.

5. All of the candidates from ILP would be allocated to the projects. Nobody is rejected after ILP. At least I've not seen any such case so far.

6. Regarding ur letter, if u're talking abt ur joining letter, u've to wait. I had received my joining letter after a year I got the offer letter.

ILP Days... said...

Hi Subhadeep,

No need to go through anything. They will teach you everything in ILP. If you are from Computer Science background then it will be very easy for you. For people from non-computer background, they teach you everything including basics. So, don't worry. Enjoy your ILP.

will there be any medical test conducted separately during ILP..??

ILP Days... said...

No, there won't be any separate medical test during ILP. Before you join TCS, you have to go through the medical test. That's it.

pratik said...

Hi Pratik,

If you know basics of programming, database and modelling techniques like UML then that should be sufficient. Anyways they will teach you everything. So, dont worry.

and the some main topics also..
and what about the project.. we have to make it in group or individually??

ILP Days... said...

Hi,

No need to worry if you are non-comp student. They teach you everything in ILP. The project will be in a group.

Anonymous said...

thnx for ur reply..
can u tell me on which topic we should make our project ??
and what is the procedure of making groups there ??

ILP Days... said...

Hi,

It's totally upto you which topic you choose for your project. You can take up basic projects like library management, airlines booking etc.

You can form the group on your own. There is no restriction on that.

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much 4 ur info...I got recruited into TCS through campus placements. I hav 4 months left to finish my final semester. I'm from B.Tech Biotechnology and want to learn something before i go for ILP. Could u give me any suggestions reg prior preparation to ILP??

ILP Days... said...

Hi,

It seems that you do not have any IT background. The good thing to start with is basic programming concepts. You may study 'C' language basics that will give you the understanding of basic programming concepts. Also, you may go through basic database concepts. It will be sufficient to start with.

Sir,
i am a tamilmedium student.i am really worrying about ILP because of my communication skill but i m technically good.there is a any elimination during ILP.

ILP Days... said...

Not at all dude, relax. This is not a selection for company CEO. And as one of my supervisors had said once, "You are clay and ILP is to mold you into a fine pot". So, when you are joining ILP, it's obvious that you would have some weekness/shortcomings and once you go through 2 monts of ILP, you are supposed to get transformed into a professional.

I know it's not that simple but the bottomline of all this is to tell you that "Just relax, not to worry about your communication".

Padmaja said...

M good at techical and not atall bad in communication...but the problem is i have stammering problem and when i get nervous it becums worser..i dnt know how to handle the situation :'(

ILP Days... said...

Hi Padmaja,

Don't be afraid. You are not going to work in BPO, right? You would work on a project where most of the time you will have to sit in front of your computer and do coding, documentation etc. with little need to talk.

Only during meetings, client calls, you'll have to speak. But that's not a problem either. One of my colleagues has a stammering problem but he doesn't have difficulties in communicating with clients, supervisors or team-mates. So, relax. People understand genuine problem.

hi
pls tell me the duration of ilp course in 2012

ILP Days... said...

Hi,

I answered the similar question in another post today. I will repeat it here. I joined in Aug 2006 and that time the duration was 55 working days. I have no idea about any recent changes in ILP duration. I will try to find it out. Anyways, what the ILP duration is, it's fun for sure.

Thanx for the information...
I am a Btech in Electrical Engg and got an offer letter from TCS. I have very little knowledge in programming but I love logic and know a bit of C language. Will it be too difficult for me to catch up with the ones from IT stream? Before joining will have to learn any new language or will ILP be enough? Thank you.

ILP Days... said...

Hi,

Just relax. Good that you are starting your career and your first few days will be TCS ILP, which I call "Golden Days". ILP is fun, ILP is learning, ILP is...well, you experience it yourself and let me know.

I have repeatedly mentioned in my all the blog posts and comments that ILP is to groom you as a professional. If you don't know something then it's your chance to learn. It's always better to learn something with an "empty slate". With half knowledge, you need to unlearn and relearn. You will understand what I am saying, may be after few days/months. But the bottom line is just relax and enjoy your ILP.
